To the moderators, if considered necessary to move this thread to another more appropriate section.

Dear Friends of the Forum, I open this thread to be placing and presenting the skeletal composition of Pterophyllum scalare.

It's something that always attracted me. This fascinating world that lies within our Scalar and goes unnoticed for a good part of which is dedicated to the acuriofilia.

This is a work that started long ago with work timid dissection and currently on a scheduled'm doing for my home forum "Planetacuario" and as this fascinating world that is dedicated "The Angelfish Society" which begins to occupy an important part in my life.

The truth is that if I find interesting, because although I have searched for information on bone formation thereof, it is really rare and found only allows us to get an idea of how our fish are inside.

When we want to understand something more of their adaptation to nature, we have no choice but to explore through dissection.

Dissection technique

With the "Technical Dissections" not at all intend to do a treatise on it, but yes give out the possibilities before us.

But before following questions arise, why dissecting a Scale?, What gives us?, I guess many more will emerge and that you yourselves will go finding the answers.

Enter something deeper analysis of the internal constitution will give us an idea of its adaptation to the environment, responses to it by their physiology, and sometimes in much deeper detail disease identification and its skeletal composition.

It's funny, but I would like to find on the Web or on paper more details of our fish "Scalar" anatomy skeleton, organs, etc.. however seems to be a field not explored, or at least found publications devoted to "Pterophyllum scalare", jump to the most obvious times to make a quantum leap and penetrate the depths of certain diseases without the didactic course focus and teach us, basic and important functions of the constitution and anatomy.

When looking for documentary support for performing dissections, I have noted that most has focused on a single model "Fresh Work". While we will make this model also dissection in a second part, we begin with the "Work in cooking".

Therefore clarify why differentiation of both necessity and dissections.
"I work in cooking"

With work in cooking destroys most of us could reveal evidence or provide their internal organs. Also of course any external semi character, gills and eyes. However, this type of work will serve to lift the skeletal and bone map our Pterophyllum. Being heated fish body allows easy fleshing the same and go pulling out and assembling the component parts, as well as some little secrets that reveal the same closely guarded, of which we have heard about but never seen. I have not found a picture of the complete skeleton of a Scalar and analysis of bone parts, so I think it is time to lift as, analogies that map and comparisons with other fish and Cichlid Teleost finish identifying its different parts.
"I work in fresco"

A must ascertain when the functionality of the internal organs, as well as to observe these differences with fellow family "The Cichlids". This type of scan will reveal even some diseases in some cases, not all, because in a large part of the cases will be necessary to use high-level microscopy and so alien to our possibilities. If for work in cooking is essential and appropriate needles using various enmangas, being more than enough for the task, in fresh dissection scalpels scalpels or be irreplaceable to penetrate in the scene that we are hiding behind skin scales and .

For such explorations "Fresh Work", our Scalar must not have been dead a long time, indeed, sometimes just hours can disrupt work at the beginning of decomposition processes destroying or falsifying evidence of its organs. If for any reason we can not tackle the work at the time of death, if we can proceed to their conservation.

To keep the copies with which you can work then we use two methods, cold storage (freezing copy), or the inclusion in a glass jar with Formalin diluted to 10%, which can add Borax, a teaspoon of tea for each 1/4L to avoid mold.
In both cases it is necessary to give much-needed guidelines at both the effectiveness of conservation and care in handling and preparation.

In the case of fish under cold chain (freezing), we note that its documentary value will decline over the months. When conservation is by Formalin diluted, should take precautions. Regarding the properties Formaldehyde is highly toxic and irritating, wear gloves and avoid contact with it, and breathing of vapors.

Bony parts of the scalar

We recall that we have two possibilities in the work to be performed, one of them was the dissection of specimens subjected to cooking. This method use only serves to disassemble and analyze our fish bone pieces, we can see the complexity manifests to penetrate their separation, special coating complexity is all bone and head shape. The soft tissues and organs will be destroyed not valid for analysis.

When I cook I do not mean exactly the catchall term, much less take for the specimens to be analyzed, to boil it, simply and to get an idea, it is softened and meat tissues to which makes us easier to release and cleaning.

Ideally, submit the fish to the lowest temperature even if we increase the time you have to stay in hot water all the time checking that water does not boil at all, keep in mind that the scalars are flattened body and narrow and that the effects when subjected to heating water are proportional therefore also the size of the specimen to be analyzed is also another variant, not the same pitch introduce a standard length of 5cm to 10cm one. When the eye turns white can be taken as a good indication that the Scale is ready for skeletal survey. Anyway when cooking is done the first one can be seen if the cleaning and separating the meat from the bone pieces is easy or difficult, indicating the need to increase the times given in the Chaldean or why not reduce it.

Typically, the ventral (soft) disposing, Ojo!, As now exposed and possibly loose the components of the pharyngeal jaw and depending on the depth of heating because even we get to drop the otoliths, with the difficulty subsequently involve the search and collection. Note that for example the otolith smaller the "LAPILLUS" and depending on the size of the Scale may be less than the head of a pin.

One possibility at the time of submitting our Chaldean piece is wrapped in foil, while avoiding the dispersion of the soft tissues, prevent us to control with a glance the status of cooking it.

[B] Before submitting our exemplary dissection can and should be taking notes in our lab notebook a series of visual observations of the fish, not only of the variety or species, file numbering for both photographic as parts or samples taken later, and their appearance, visual damage and skin scales, fin damage, and any other information that we think is relevant and is interesting shape. [/ B] [/ COLOR]

If our research, curiosity or interest leads to somehow make the odd dissection (more than one), this archival work and classification, will no doubt also will add value to our work.

If something should not miss is the standard measure of fish subjected to dissection, especially when we will establish measures of bone parts or internal organs.

If empower and materials to make a success of our work are important, not less so is the "patience", fetch a quiet, conditioned to the tasks to undertake and meet course focused on the actions we made.

In the work of cleaning the soft, fleshy parts of our fish (cooking), instruments that are paramount are, the mounted needles, a fine brush (watercolor type), small dissecting scissors and tweezers. To think that despite everything we once these materials in these sizes of parts, will be enormous and somehow hinder their use and handling.

In the video below you see a model of cleanliness using mounted needles and brush, despite being tiny in size objects are sometimes large for our purpose, especially if it's clear some parts that require more precision.

The next piece of video is an example of the fleshy parts cleaning.[COLOR=Black]

Otoliths (calcareous concretion)

When looking for previously published material on the otoliths of our Scalar, I must admit that I only found one publication and rather low on them. "Nuevas contribuciones al conocimiento de los peces actuales" by Juan Bauza and Manuel Compte, pages 79, 80 and 92.

So our work is to develop and expand specific information on Scalar Otoliths.

For those who are new to this world inside our fish, several questions will arise, but perhaps the most immediate are What they are, What are they for?.

The otoliths are one of the most important parts of the inner ear of fish, particularly bony fish (teleost) are calcareous forms constituted largely by Aragonite deposition (calcium carbonate CaCO3) and conchiolin protein.

These are found within a few bags located in an area near the braincase and are known as "otic capsules." To be precise, there are three pairs of members (six in total), known as LAPILLUS (2) Asteriscus (2) and Sagitta (2), one set of each of the pieces located in each sachet and on both sides of the fish.

Otoliths and keep a similar characteristic shape in each species, within species differ slightly, however their main forms allow identification and therefore categorize it.

Its size is very small, we reached in previous paragraphs discuss the tiniest otolith is "LAPILLUS" and in some cases barely the size of a pinhead.

These otolith "LAPILLUS" Scalar correspond to a standard size 5cm. Its shape resembles that of a kidney. Otolith these are included in a camera called "Utricle" and the rest of the otic capsule submerged in a liquid that is the endolymph. The primary function of these otoliths is to act as fish informing level of position.

The otolith "Sagitta" is the most interesting and studied, yielding valuable information on Scalar growth and the stages through which it has passed through your life, it is now known that the endolymph is deposited these layers calcareous concentric rings that match creating growth stages, so that viewing the number of rings can be analyzed fish age. Perhaps a common mistake is to think that the size will always correspond with the age of Scale, however it has been found that the size and calcareous deposit these layers are influenced by the environment in which they develop, if this is more or less favorable development will ultimately affect the otolith, so that if the fish has gone through stages in which the media has not been favorable (including food of course), the rings will be closer together than in times of splendor.

The "Sagitta" is inside the camera called "saccule" is the otolith that first receives the vibrations and will then transmit the otolith who the "Asteriscus". The following "sagittas" belong to copies whose standard length 5cm round.

http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab318/Juanfra1957/IMAGENES%20ARTICULO%2017%20EL%20ESCALAR%20MICROSCO PIO/Otolithsagittameasuremeta_zps859a2a43.jpg

We go into more details of the otolith "Sagitta" and morphology.

The otoliths "Sagitta" are described morphologically in some publications, their names being applicable to all species, applying in this case the members of our species [I] Pterophyllum scalare [/ I].

The otolith used to define the morphology of the otolith "Sagitta" the [I] Pterophyllum scalare [/ I], corresponding to a sample of 5 cm standard length.

Externally to the contour of the otolith assigned identifications to allow reference to the same comparisons, studies, etc.. On the left we can identify as the first element to the "Face" and "Antirostro" between the two will form a hollow recess is called, these prominences and depressions, otoliths vary from others, but we have observed that these patterns are always training.

At the top, then the "Antirostro", is called "Dorsal Edge" and the bottom below the "Face", "Edge Belly". In the previous photos of otoliths "Sagitta" although we can see the "Face" and "Antirostro" keep some parallels, in the case of the regions "Edge Dorsal" and "Ventral edge" can appear rather significant differences. Such differences highlight the presence in many of these otoliths, the jagged shape of the area "Edge Belly".

The next element we see in these otoliths is a depression in the limestone formation, running it from the "cutout" until almost the opposite region of the otolith. In this depression is known as "Groove" (Sulcus Acusticus), well that this groove is in contact with the "stain", constituted by nerve endings is connected to the auditory nerve.

In the groove can also identify some parts, starting from area "Face" and "Recess" we find the region called "ostium" in our Pterophyllum is wide, narrowing as it starts the channel calling this area "Collum" , moving the channel forms the area known as "peaks", where small form salient, the "Furrow" will end up in an area called "Cauda", this area increases significantly in size, presenting a depression over the face of the otolith and acquiring an oval.

The mouth of our fish is a "Terminal", located on the front of the head, the size of your mouth, is related to prey capture, small minnows and other live food varied.

The jaws of the Scalar, are exceptional, formed by the premaxilla (top) and alveolar (bottom), are equipped with tiny teeth all monocusp shaped, ie ending in a single point, are of caniniform with what we give an idea that nature has set for a predatory nature diet. Despite having numerous small teeth, but prehensile function becomes suction. Reserve shredder function of food to the pharyngeal jaws.

In the central area of both the tooth premaxila as the teeth are more prominent caniniform type, being then all spinnerets smaller side monocusp character and being shorter and numerous.

The premaxilla also called upper jaw bone is composed of a pair, ie it forms both the left and right, both bones are closely united by the anterior maxilla.

Aka dentary lower jaw bone is formed by a pair, left and right, both are joined through the mandibular symphysis.

A rather curious feature is its ability to project forward enlarging it and thereby allowing greater suction, this peculiarity of projecting the mouth is what we call "protractile" and is produced by a joint pool set in the middle the maxilas.

Dental base is formed by a wide plate that is attached via connective fibers, is what is known as the root of the teeth.

The teeth are conical shapes are composed of ortodentina or osteodentin.
The pulp cavity filled conjunctival cells, blood vessels and osteodentin.
Enamel outer layer composed of vasodentina, vitrodentina, etc..

The teeth do not last long, deteriorate and fall being replaced by new ones.

Well after this short break, we continue with the theme of the jaws of the Pterophyllum scalare

So far we have presented the characteristics of the mouth and jaws, but we still have other jaws than other cichlids possess Scale, we refer to the "pharyngeal jaws" most important in their functions live prey predator, pharynx connecting the mouth to the gastrointestinal tract.

These are almost undoubtedly obtained the first photos of these "pharyngeal jaws". In the section "The dissection fresh", we will see integrated into their respective bodies "Ceratobranquias".

Both jaws, both the lower and upper pairs are formed bone containing the teeth.

The photographs are for a Climb with a standard length of around 5 cm.

The teeth that make both jaws unlike the mouth, are of bicuspid, are numerous and cover the surface of the jaws, are more like those of a "caniniform" coinciding with our Scalar predatory diet.

The pharyngeal jaw is attached to the two lower ceratobranchial, (see "fresh dissection"). Most bony fish have pharyngeal gill arches modified to process their prey (Liem 1986, Wainwright 1989), however our Scalar like Ciclidae family, has new joints in the upper jaw throat, presenting a muscular sling and suture (junction point) in the past ceratobranchial.

Seguimos con otro avance. Y comenzamos con la columna vertebral.

.../...

http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab318/Juanfra1957/IMAGENES%20ARTICULO%2017%20EL%20ESCALAR%20MICROSCO PIO/backbonemeta_zpsfcf70429.gif

The 29 vertebrae of the scalar
License images: http://www.safecreative.org/work/1306255324885

We continue with another step. And we start with the spine.

.../...

The backbone of Pterophyllum scalare.

In this chapter we analyze the vertebrae that make up the skeleton of the [I] Pterophyllum scalare [/ I].

If any bone that forms the skeleton of the fish has functions that fit into the set of their anatomy and that meet certain requirements of adaptation, the 29 vertebrae of the Scalar no longer a major part in understanding the more of how the inner world is made and the importance it plays in it. The group is full of vertebrae which we call column or spine.

As we will discover in this chapter and in fresh dissection presents some complex functions. This presents spine curved shape unlike a number of other species of fish.

When beginning the dissections and proceed to clean the different vertebrae, they would unravel some peculiarities of some of them significant elements that we analyze, and in some cases are those of our fish.

Far from presenting a uniform along the vertebrae that make up the Spine, different features appear, or groups as well as individually.

Numbered from the bones of the skull to the tail (of the 1st on the 29th), we can see with the naked eye as main difference that the set of vertebrae, the first 13 have only the "Espina Neural" (top of vertebra) is , while the remaining 15 have two spines developed, both the "Neural Spinal" as the "Thorn Hemal" (bottom of the vertebrae), vertebra 29 differs from the other in form and constitution.

The set of the first 13 vertebrae are called "Vertebrae abs" (single neural spine) except the 4th vertebra (differentiated training), the following 14 are called "Caudal vertebrae" (with both spines neural and hemal), and the last two vertebrae to form the 29 penultimate identifies them as "Vertebra preural" and the latter as "ural vertebra".

.../...

... / ...

The spine that runs from the skull to the tail although it supports the weight of the fish if it will play an important role, running through her spinal cord and the dorsal aorta and caudal vein. Another important role of the spine, is the support to the rest of thorns along with the muscles used in locomotion, will make its main functions. The flexibility of the spine comes given by a series of ligaments

Vertebrae are heavily mineralized core structure is basically cylindrical shape with concave ends anficélica known as vertebrae, for the runs inside the "Notochord" embryonic found between the vertebrae the intervertebral discs.

In the spine we find that the neural spines (top), form an arch through which the spinal cord passes who connect the brain to organs, muscles and nerves, we also find that below the column takes the aorta, which in the case of the caudal vertebrae are channeled through hemal arch.

Another little piece more, as you see this going step by step.

... / ...

But let us analyze the different vertebrae.

Starting from the head, the first two vertebrae have virtually the same way, except variations in size of the elements that compose them.

[B] [U] 1st, 2nd and 3rd vertebrae [/ U] [/ B]

The first three vertebrae have only neural spine of the dorsal part of the vertebra out later joining neural arches to form the spinous process, leaving in between neural canal through which pass the spinal cord, the body that belongs to the nervous system of the fish.

The neural canal these first vertebrae presents double ogival shaped, one upon another.

In the first vertebra, we can observe the salient (torque as both sides), that leave the spinal disc toward the second vertebra, bone formation is known as "Zygopophysis" presented in this vertebra sharply.

The neural arch that occurs in the back, as we will see throughout repeated vertebrae comprising the spine, with variations in the length of the spine, as well as the neural canal.

The third vertebra as we mentioned bears some similarity to the above.

In this vertebra the zygopophysis are less pronounced than before and are also oriented towards the fourth vertebra.

With respect to the neural canal, we can observe a significant reduction of the same, while the vertebrae above the top of the double warhead was larger, in this vertebra can see how dramatically reduces into something merely face.

For us it is one of the preferred vertebrae due to ventral apophysis presented (hemal support). The bone canal with its shape and no feature is repeated in other vertebrae of the spine, presents some interesting features. Normally hemal arches are found in the columns of the fish linked to the caudal vertebrae, lacking these abdominal vertebrae vertebra except for this Pterophyllum scalare. Constitutive differences between hemal arches of the caudal vertebrae and the quarter vertebra are clearly different without comparable constituents.

We should be allowed to name this bone formation, and perhaps nothing better than "hemal Support" due to its shape and the destination for which seems to have been designed. We have no doubt that conform advance research in other fish species, particularly cichlids, maybe we discover this same support in the 4th vertebra.

This support has bone spurs in closing thereof (half-round shape inverted), this kind of pipe or tube unlike all other arches hemal, also has a slope of around 45 degrees and its main opening of the anterior path of the third vertebra.

For this support will the aorta and major blood vessels and possibly serve fixing part of the pharyngeal jaw bodybuilding.

The constitution of the rest of the vertebra follows the pattern of the rest of the spine, Zygopophysis, Prezigapophysis, Canal and Neural Arch and of course in the dorsal spine "Neural Thorn".

Neural Channel this vertebra, followed by reduction and observed in the above manner. With a significant reduction compared to the same vertebra third the top of the nose is shaped double face.

This group of vertebrae comprising from fifth to thirteenth, have a very similar structure, with almost similar. All have "parapophysis" on the ventral and "neural spine".

We started with this series of vertebrae in the order that got along established.

Fifth vertebra unlike previous abominal has in its zone the "parapophysis" spines open at both ends of the vertebra, the angle is approximately 90 °.

This vertebra, the "neural spine" has the above structure, both in its "neural arch" as in "neural Canal."
Lacks as the first of "Channel hemal".

Regarding your side view we have to emphasize that the "neural spine", is formed by ribs that give consistency to it. Especially base possesses two sides "transverse arches" com amid canal across.

On the Angelfish of reference for all the vertebrae are analyzing, the size of the "neural spine" in size somewhat less than the quarter vertebra. However, the "Canal neural" shows a slight increase over the previous.

Seguimos con el análisis de las vértebras

.../...

Continue with the analysis of the vertebrae

The sixth vertebra follows the same basic composition in previous vertebral structure formed by Spinal Neural and parapophysis located in the ventral.

Relative to the size with respect to the vertebrae above shows an increase in size, but in turn has a slight decrease neural canal. Despite these variations of this case, the tendency is to gradually increase the size of the Neural Espina as we go forward in the number of vertebrae. Regarding the Neural Canal is a tendency to decrease.

Lacks "Canal hemal".

In their training lateral ribs keep popping that give consistency to the "neural spine". The "transverse arch" which appeared in the previous vertebra continue to reinforce the consistency of the spine to attach the disc of the vertebra, leaving a channel in the center this "transverse arch."

At present this work to begin on the vertebrae, mention was made to the role of the channel in Neural spines in support of the spinal cord. In the case of vertebrae hemal, its channel is traversed by the aorta.

In relation to size of both thorns, the Espina Neural start decreasing as we proceed with the number of vertebra. With respect to the Espina Hemal, this first vertebra is the of greater size.

Size and Hemal Neural spines are decreasing. The size of the channels is maintained fluctuations.

Walking around this fascinating world inside our Angelfish offers us many satisfactions, performing dissections offer us different images than others had just seen, and above all establish comparative set certain prototypes in the constitution thereof.

One of the latest dissections (in this case a Marble Angelfish), presented in the consticución exception of the third vertebra, lacking the support Hemal, I just could not believe it. It is therefore considered interesting to keep working, so you can verify the prototype not only bone formation, if not sometime even determine if what we are seeing is an exception to the rule.

We continue our tour in the Spine with the twenty-sixth vertebra.

This vertebra continues with decreasing both Thorns and Neural Hemal, also we can see a significant decrease in their channels.

The angle formed by the spines continues to decline, for this example we see that even the angle has dropped to 90 degrees.

Good kids / as, after this short break we continue with the bony parts of the Scalar, during these days performing some dissections.

This vertebra also opted to place it separately from the rest of vertebrae, to present significant differences in their constitution with the rest of the skeleton.

To capture the bony parts of this final stretch, it was necessary to return the dissections in order to set the standard formations thereof, between the dissections are some slight differences in the sizes and some form in its constitution, but this remains doubt the pieces in this final stretch.

Twenty-eighth vertebra, preural penultimate called vertebrae.

We commented that the spines of the vertebrae 27,28 and 29 have been joined to form a whole set final and Epurales hypural plates, as we shall see later.

In the vertebra 27 and thorns were in the form of plate.

Well continue. What we do with the braincase, but then again on the end plates of the vertebral column as finalizing the drawings go.

Well continue. What we do with the braincase, but then again on the end plates of the vertebral column as finalizing the drawings go.

The braincase.

We started with two parts that link to the spine, such as the Basioccipital and the Foramen Magnum, the latter is also known as the Great Hole.

The Foramen magnum (great hole), represents an important part of our fish through the same spinal cord connects with the spine.
It is located in the back of neurocranium and its lower zone (temporo occipital area).

It appears oval and almost vertically to the plane of Angelfish, spinal cord connect to the medulla oblongata (spinal extension), thus establishing communication with the brain.

In addition to connecting with the spinal cord, the foramen magnum pass the vertebral arteries, spinal arteries, etc..

The other interesting constituent of this back is the basioccipital.

The bone is located below the foramen magnum is rounded and is located between the occipital condyles. Below find bone Parasphenoid startup.

The basioccipital besides being dedondeado presents a concave shape, communicating with the first vertebra of the column, leading to the notochord. Presents an inclination of about 45 ° to the plane of the fish, and about 135 º about the foramen magnum.

The Angelfish occipital condyles allow slight movements of the head, they are triangular and have been located on both sides of the Foramen Magnum and between the basioccipital.

Bueno chicos/as una noticia.

Well guys / as news.

A few days ago I was invited to a party at the home of a Malawi Cichlids breeder operation and sale, (in thousands). Among the thousands whenever a death occurs in the day, so take advantage to bring me some cichlids that will go to the dissection table, this will enable us to compare in that fourth vertebra so special about our Scalar.

A greeting

Hi guys / girls, started the academic year in Spain, for days captures my attention. However, endeavor to continue the show though perhaps to distance day.
We continue with the braincase.

The following drawings show the braincase Angelfish. Formed by numerous bones give this characteristic shape in which the supraoccipital protruding especially.

The bones that make up the braincase are linked together giving you a great consistency.

We started marking some of the bones that form and we will present later.

The first bones to be the Parasphenoides present, Vomer and supraoccipital.

The following illustration shows the braincase seen from the top.

http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab318/Juanfra1957/IMAGENES%20ARTICULO%2017%20EL%20ESCALAR%20MICROSCO PIO/supraoccipitallateralenglmeta_zps7aa11c67.gif

We started to analyze the different bones that make up the braincase.

[B] Supraoccipital. [/ B]

In the supraoccipital bone, we can distinguish different regions. This bone is shaped almost triangle, the hypotenuse of which would be the axis connecting the front end, with its lower rear. The area called "occipital crest" is quite pronounced, almost forming an angle of 90 ° between the outer faces.

At the bottom thereof distinguish three areas known as "Front margin", "parietal margin" and "Margin epiotico" the "Front margin" is almost 50% the size of the bottom of the bone. These three zones are those that bind to neurocraneum.

The "Margin parietal", like the "Margin epiotico" presented by their profiles especially jagged shapes that fit into the braincase.

The posteroventral margin of the supraoccipital forms the upper rim of the foramen magnum.

http://i875.photobucket.com/albums/ab318/Juanfra1957/IMAGENES%20ARTICULO%2017%20EL%20ESCALAR%20MICROSCO PIO/parasphenoideslateralenglmeta_zpsaa25241a.gif

In the braincase outline drawings, we had identified the Parasphenoides.

[B] Parasphenoides [/ B]

It is a long bone that occurs uniquely, like the "supraoccipital" other skull bones will do so few, finding both its left and right side. This bone forms the base of the skull and also forms the roof of the mouth.

In the front of this bone will find the area called "Previous process", who connect to the "Prevomer", meanwhile we see opposite "Posterior incision" which join the "Basioccipital".

On the sides of Parashenoides, find alar processes, who will join the prootics. Processes for displaying wing shape in its front part being concave and dent type on the back. Are approximately 1/3 of the total length of Parasphenoides

Its bottom is known as "Ventral keel" and is in the form of an arch.
