Quick How-to Guide on the Angelfish Genetics Calculator

After you start the calculator, You will see a form just like this: (click images to enlarge)

To make a test cross of Angelfish, you may type a genetic description into the entry field. The gene names are the TAS standard gene names found here: TAS Genetic Notations.  The program will only recognize the TAS standard gene names. Mistakes are ignored. (Stupid calculator trick #1, try entering your name to see what kind of Angelfish you are...)

However, it is easier to click the "Enter Genes" button, and use the "genetic helper page" as shown below. This page will show you all the possible Angelfish genes and allow you to create a genetic description quickly.

You can click the buttons to describe the fish you have, and the gene map and phenotype will be updated as you enter the genes. The alleles are enforced by the program. The "Silver" button will reset the genes to a wild type.

When you are done, the "Done" button will copy the gene map you entered back to the main screen.

The "Cancel" is a quit function, nothing will be copied back to the main screen.

The parent descriptions may be changed by clicking on them, and typing a new name:

Note: the program will save your entries and restore them the next time you start the program.

Display Options

The program will display the genetics of the offspring, the expected percentages, and the phenotype name.

Click the "Generate Offspring" button to spawn. The results of this cross will be displayed in the offspring list.

Since everyone will probably try it, be warned that the maximal hybrid crosses can take a while. (Cross two fish with one of everything)

You can choose to display the phenotypes only. In this mode, the genetic combinations that produce the same phenotype will be combined, and the percentages added together. (Note that the copy offspring "<<" buttons are disabled in this mode.)

And, you can display the mix of types with color expressions, and fin type expressions together:

Copy Offspring

You can copy a selected offspring to a parent box using the “<<” button. (Only enabled when displaying Genotypes, as a Phenotype can include many genotypes)

This shortcut allows you to quickly select your next generation crosses:

And

or with the color and fin types separated:

For making test crosses, there is a "Reset Pair" button. This will return you to the original cross (before you copied any offspring)
